Pinguicula moranensis var. caudata

$29.99

A classic variety of the iconic Mexican butterwort, Pinguicula moranensisvar.caudata is celebrated for its impressive size and showy foliage. Its wide, broad leaves can form rosettes reaching up to 6–8 inches across, developing a vibrant purplish-red blush when grown under intense light. Distinguished by its elongated nectar spur (the "caudata" or tail feature of the flower), this variety produces large, vivid magenta-purple blooms while serving as an extremely efficient living trap for fungus gnats and fruit flies.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Bright indirect light to moderate direct sun, or high-intensity LED grow lights (strong light enhances the rich reddish-purple coloration on the foliage).

  • Water: Distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater only. Keep soil damp using a shallow water tray during its summer active growth period.

  • Soil: A mix of equal parts pumice, perlite, silica sand, and peat. Never use standard potting soil or added fertilizers.

  • Temperature & Hardiness: Prefers 65°F–82°F. Subtropical (USDA Zones 10–11)—best cultivated indoors year-round on sunny windowsills or in terrariums.

  • Dry Succulent Phase (Dormancy): In winter as day length shortens, it transitions to a dry succulent phase. The large carnivorous leaves drop back, and the plant forms a compact, non-sticky resting rosette. During this period, stop tray watering and allow the soil substrate to dry out significantly between light waterings until spring growth resumes.

Shipping Information:

  • Bare-Root Delivery: All carnivorous plants are shipped bare-root (no soil or container) to keep shipping safe and affordable.

  • Cold Weather Shipping: A 72-Hour Heat Pack is required if daytime or nighttime temperatures in your area are below 40°F. Orders shipped to freezing regions without a heat pack cannot be guaranteed against cold damage.
