Pinguicula weser

from $14.99

A prized hybrid of Pinguicula moranensis and Pinguicula ehlersiae, Pinguicula 'Weser' combines refined aesthetics with functional utility. Its smooth, rounded leaves blush a gorgeous pink-to-magenta under bright light and are coated in microscopic, sticky droplets that work like natural flypaper. It is famous in the houseplant community as the single best biological defense against pesky fungus gnats and fruit flies, producing vibrant violet flowers throughout the year.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light to moderate direct sun, or high-intensity LED grow lights (strong light brings out rich pink and purple tones in the foliage).

  • Water: Distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater only. Keep the soil damp during its active summer phase using a shallow tray of water.

  • Soil: A highly airy, well-draining mineral mix is best—a mix of equal parts pumice, perlite, silica sand, and peat. Never use standard potting soil or added fertilizers.

  • Temperature & Hardiness: Prefers 65°F–82°F. Not cold-hardy (USDA Zones 10–11)—keep indoors as a windowsill or terrarium plant year-round.

  • Dry Succulent Phase (Dormancy): In winter as days shorten, Mexican butterworts transition into a dry phase. The plant shrinks into a small, tight rosette of non-sticky, succulent leaves. During this resting period, stop tray watering and allow the soil to dry out significantly between light waterings until spring growth returns.

Shipping Information:

  • Bare-Root Delivery: All carnivorous plants are shipped bare-root (no soil or container) to keep shipping safe and affordable.

  • Cold Weather Shipping: A 72-Hour Heat Pack is required if daytime or nighttime temperatures in your area are below 40°F. Orders shipped to freezing regions without a heat pack cannot be guaranteed against cold damage.
