Drosera filiformis "Threadleaf Sundew" Old Dock, NC

from $14.99

Native to the eastern coast of North America, Drosera filiformis grows dramatic, upright leaves that look like shimmering green and red threads reaching up to 8–12 inches tall. Lined top-to-bottom with glistening, dew-tipped tentacles, its tall vertical structure makes it an absolute bug magnet—capable of catching everything from fungus gnats and fruit flies to larger insects like houseflies and mosquitoes.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Full direct sun to very high-intensity grow lights (6+ hours of direct sunlight is key to keeping the tall leaves upright and dripping in dew).

  • Water: Distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater only (tap water minerals are harmful). Keep the pot resting in a shallow tray of water throughout the active growing season.

  • Soil: 4:1 mix of pure peat moss and perlite. Never use standard potting soil or added fertilizers.

  • Temperature & Hardiness: Exceptionally cold-tolerant! Thrives in summer heat between 68°F–95°F. Hardy down to 14°F or lower in USDA Zones 5–9 (depending on the exact subspecies/origin).

  • Dormancy:Requires a true winter dormancy. In late autumn as temperatures drop and daylight shortens, the tall leaves die back completely, and the plant forms a tight, fuzzy resting bud (hibernaculum) at the soil surface. Keep the soil barely damp (not saturated) over winter until warm spring weather triggers vigorous new growth.

Shipping Information:

  • Bare-Root Delivery: All carnivorous plants are shipped bare-root (no soil or container) to keep shipping safe and affordable.

  • Cold Weather Shipping: A 72-Hour Heat Pack is required if daytime or nighttime temperatures in your area are below 40°F. Orders shipped to freezing regions without a heat pack cannot be guaranteed against cold damage.
