Drosera tokaiensis "Toka Sundew"
A naturally occurring fertile hybrid native to Japan (a cross between Drosera spatulata and Drosera rotundifolia), Drosera tokaiensis forms neat, compact rosettes of spoon-shaped leaves. It blends the best traits of both parents: vigorous, fast growth and intense dew production. In high light, the entire rosette turns a brilliant, shimmering crimson while constantly snacking on fungus gnats and fruit flies.
Care Instructions:
Light: Full sun to strong grow lights (4–6+ hours of direct light encourages intense red flushing and heavy dew production).
Water: Distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater only (tap water minerals are harmful). Keep the pot standing in a shallow tray of water continuously.
Soil: 4:1 mix of pure peat moss and perlite. Never use regular potting soil or added fertilizers.
Temperature & Hardiness: Exceptionally adaptable! Thrives in 50°F–86°F. Hardy down to roughly 23°F in USDA Zones 7–10; frost may cause foliage to die back, but it readily re-sprouts from its roots in spring.
Dormancy: Flexible and easygoing. While it can handle a mild winter chill outdoors, it can also grow year-round indoors under warm temperatures and constant lighting without requiring a strict dormancy period.
Shipping Information:
Bare-Root Delivery: All carnivorous plants are shipped bare-root (no soil or container) to keep shipping safe and affordable.
Cold Weather Shipping: A 72-Hour Heat Pack is required if daytime or nighttime temperatures in your area are below 40°F. Orders shipped to freezing regions without a heat pack cannot be guaranteed against cold damage.
