Venus Flytrap 'Chinese Dumpling'

from $17.99

Originating from Chinese breeding lines, Dionaea muscipula 'Chinese Dumpling' is one of the most distinctive and sought-after mutated cultivars in the carnivorous plant hobby. Instead of the typical elongated, clam-shell traps with long, wispy cilia, this variety produces rounded, inflated traps with severely reduced or fused cilia. The outer walls curve inwards to form a plump, cup-like shape resembling a neatly folded dumpling, flushing with soft pink-to-crimson blushes on the interior under strong sunlight.

Care Instructions:

  • Light:Full outdoor sun (6+ hours of direct sunlight daily). If grown indoors, a high-output LED grow light is strictly required to maintain trap shape and blush.

  • Water: Distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater only (tap water minerals cause rapid decay). Keep substrate sitting in a shallow tray of water constantly during the growing season.

  • Soil: A 4:1 mix of peat moss and perlite. Never use standard potting soil or added fertilizers.

  • Temperature & Hardiness: Prefers 68°F–90°F during summer. Temperate native (USDA Zones 7–9)—thrives outdoors in full sun during spring, summer, and fall.

  • Winter Dormancy:Required. From late autumn to early spring, the plant enters a cool resting period between 32°F–50°F. Traps may turn dark and die back while the bulb rests underground; keep soil damp until spring growth returns.

Shipping Information:

  • Bare-Root Delivery: All carnivorous plants are shipped bare-root (no soil or container) to keep shipping safe and affordable.

  • Cold Weather Shipping: A 72-Hour Heat Pack is required if daytime or nighttime temperatures in your area are below 40°F. Orders shipped to freezing regions without a heat pack cannot be guaranteed against cold damage.
